Position: Gardener/Horticulturalist

Compensation: $14-20/hour starting pay, depending on previous experience

Hungry Gnome Gardenscapes is a 12-year-old owner-operated company in Athens, GA dedicated to connecting people to their landscape. Having gone through several stages of growth, Hungry Gnome has grown intentionally small (owner and 1 employee) so that the owner can spend most of his working time in the field. Though still engaging in occasional design and install projects, ranging from planting to small hardscape projects, our main focus is on providing high-quality landscape care that excludes turf management. Most of our clients rely on us to perform timely pruning, fertility management, weeding, mulching, and general plant care. We also have several clients for whom we maintain vegetable gardens.

Summary of Position: Work alongside owner and occasionally alone tending the landscapes of clients.

Specific Duties:

1. Hand prune shrubs and trees and clean up resulting debris

2. Control weeds by hand removal, hoeing, and application of herbicides

3. Install wood mulch and pine straw

4. Operate line trimmer (weed whacker) and blower

5. Apply carbon-based fertilizers and other soil amendments

6. Apply pesticides and fungicides

7. Work with owner to install various types of landscape projects including: plants, raised beds, irrigation, trellises, fences, retaining walls, pavers, compost bins, garden edging, paths

8. Interact with client on site, demonstrating care for them and their property

9. Load truck at beginning of day and unload at end. Organize and store all tools and extra materials appropriately

10. Drive Hungry Gnome vehicle

Work Conditions:

● Work is performed outside and subject to vagaries of weather, including heat, cold, and rain

● Physically demanding with heavy lifting and repetitive motions. Lots of squatting and bending

● During summer, hours are generally 6am-1pm in order to minimize heat exposure. Fall, winter, and spring, hours are generally 8am-4pm.

● There are seasonal fluctuations with hours worked per week – spring and fall may require some overtime hours (includes overtime pay) while winter and summer may have weeks where there are only 30 hours or less.

Qualifications:

● Valid driver’s license and clean driving record

● Previous horticultural experience or training, or a strong desire to gain intimate knowledge of plants

● Ability to physically work a full day in adverse weather conditions

● Ability to organize and manage diverse activities and set priorities

● Handiness with tools
